Do you think I sketched the above woman entirely from my imagination because I’m such a fantastic artist?
Heck, no.
I’ve been practicing improving my portrait drawings lately and sketched her based on a photograph I found online. Sometimes I share my reference photos, and other times I change and add to the sketch so much that it’s a whole new drawing at the end.
For this one, I couldn’t find the photo on Pinterest again, so you’ll have to trust me. Seeing a picture made me want to attempt the shape of her eyes and the details in her necklace.
Sometimes, you need something to start drawing, and your creative juices will spill over the page.
You will never be bored if you commit to drawing or creating something new daily—hopefully, in a sketchbook.
Growing as an artist isn’t magic—it’s creating something every day with the intent to improve your skills, with a bit of discomfort sprinkled in for good measure.
You can do it too. Whether drawing, playing an instrument, writing, or anything you’re looking to improve, I know you have what it takes to succeed.
We’ll be talking about how to create consistently, and I’ll share my latest art and the art of others I admire and give advice to help get you inspired and motivated to do more of what you love.
Join this newsletter to hopefully not end up like my cartoon above. You’ll see him again when I want to teach new ideas in comic form.
I’ve updated the name of this newsletter and will be posting new content regularly. Consider a paying subscription if you’d like to join in and help me make more articles and posts that inspire and motivate others to live creative lives.
As a Black cartoonist and teacher, I truly need and appreciate the help.
I aim to publish an update weekly and regularly answer your questions in the comments section. I’ll share one free monthly post for non-paying subscribers so everyone can enjoy the fun.
