How Many Face Drawings Are Enough?
More colorful caricatures and a gag cartoon about identity.
Fitting several caricatures on one page is a fun way to practice. You decide how large to draw them and which part of the page to start on.
For the one above, I began with the face on the top left and moved right and then down. The woman's hair at the bottom moves to the left, creating a nice circular flow for the three faces.
Adding a pop of color in the background with a marker adds contrast and energy to the page. I’ve recently been into the color pop, but it’s not always necessary.
One Face is Fine
Using photo references from my go-to site, earthsworld.com, always provides a fun face to caricature.
Even if there’s only time to draw one.
Some days are super busy, so fitting in one sketch feels good and leaves me wanting more. The next day, there might be time to draw multiple faces together.
A Face Collage is Even Better
When you push “variety” in your cartoon journal using faces, you can think about drawing them in various sizes, from many angles, and with different expressions.
One face could be so big that you can’t see the entire thing because another covers it.
The orange color on the left is making its way over to the page on the right, and I tried tracing around each head with a darker blue and then adding dots. Why not?
It looks ok, but it feels like too much detail. The solid one background color works better. Trying out different techniques in a sketchbook makes it easy to see how something would work, and if it doesn’t turn out great, just turn the page.
I like how the faces look; the overcoloring throws me off in this one. I’m glad I tried it out, though.
How many face drawings are enough?
As many as you can draw that day.
When You’ve Had Enough of Trying
Sometimes, you want to relax and chill.
Remember, you get to decide who you are whenever you want.
Why have one face when you can have 3! 4!
These are awesome.
Such cool drawings, Khalid!
