Happy Halloween!
A great excuse to practice drawing one of the most complex caricature challenges—celebrities! I tend to run away from trying them because I can never get them right, but if there’s a fun gimmick in there with the practice, I can relax a little and handle my mistakes.
So, let’s see how frightened you are by several famous folks with vampire teeth.
Why is singer Taylor Swift so difficult? I look at her face, and it all makes sense. Then I put it on paper, and it never seems quite right. I’ll have to keep working on different versions later.
We all know Mick Jagger’s face is already a caricature. It wasn’t that hard to stretch and exaggerate. Adding the vampire fangs was a lot of fun.
On to the actors. I’m too afraid to show the first few drawings of comedian Steve Martin I did, but this one turned out pretty good, so I colored it.
If you’re wondering, I’m using more color to grow my skills with Caran D’Ache Neocolor pastels. A ton of caricature artists use them for live events. When I put the black foam board underneath, the pastels have a softer look to them.
I had fun drawing Zendaya, but the vampire teeth may be a little too much. Drawing her again as a normal human will be fun another day, with less shine on her cheeks. Geesh!
In my effort to make celebrity caricatures more fun, I think they’re getting better. Of course, there’s always my nemesis…
Loki
The vampire Loki version is only scary because he looks nothing like Tom Hiddleston, again. Ugh! It feels like a bad joke I can’t stop telling. Will it ever be funny?
I took a break and tried his partner on the show, Owen Wilson.
I thought I got him, so I added some colors.
Using a cast photo from the Loki show, I found Tom Hiddleston and tried to draw a portrait without making it funny.
I was so excited it looked like him; I got cocky and tried to exaggerate his face with a few more caricatures on the same page.
Oh, well. It’s a significant step in the Loki caricature progress challenge. I know I can make a portrait. It’s the exaggerating I’ll have to keep working on.

I hope you have an enjoyable Halloween.
Try to make it fun no matter what!
